There Wont Be Trumpets, or Why Your Passionate Career Might Not Be Delivered via Lightning Bolt, Cartoon Lightbulb or Speeding Train

There Wont Be Trumpets, or Why Your Passionate Career Might Not Be Delivered through Lightning Bolt, Cartoon Lightbulb or Speeding Train Quiet by Elle Moss There wont be trumpets or electrical discharges To state hes coming. (mistake doo bungle error) No Roman candles, no holy messengers ensemble, No stable of inaccessible drumming. My melodic theater geek get going, There Won't Be Trumpets going through my mind each so often. It generally prompts up during a similar discussion: my customer disclosing to me they haven't been struck at this point. Their Grown-Up Career hasn't been conveyed through lightning jolt, or animation light over their head, or a train that hits them at max throttle. All in all, on the off chance that they haven't had that thousand-watt shock, it implies they haven't discovered It yet â€" correct? All things considered, no. I have a customer who's an educator by day and an author/editorial manager as an afterthought. At the point when she came to me to make sense of what she needs to be the point at which she grows up, we began finding the interconnecting pieces: the transferable aptitudes she adored doing, the interests that have stayed steady and solid for a couple of years (yes, she's a Renaissance Soul, as well), her non-debatable work esteems, her character type… and, as she depicted it, everything started to bode well: being a pooch mentor would be the ideal fit. She's had an extreme love of pooches for a considerable length of time, despite everything cherished educating and got amped up for working with hound proprietors to all the more likely speak with their pets, it could be as pioneering as she needed, she could self-train without going into a huge amount of obligation… .the image turned out to be clear. It wasn't an electrical discharge, however the moderate acknowledgment that being a Dog Trainer was exciting for her, and simply appeared well and good. I went through 11 meetings with another customer attempting to make sense of what she could do as a Grown-Up Career other than being an essayist. She was a commonsense imaginative, needing a steady check and an occupation title that would intrigue her companions and set her family straight. However, as the weeks passed, and as she investigated to an ever increasing extent, she acknowledged the way that, well, she needed to make thinking of her Grown-Up Career. Despite the fact that she came to me needing to flee from it, she needed to settle that it was the main thing she could consider doing that would satisfy her, and that the cash/title/steadiness stuff wasn't what was essential to her. Now and then it requires some investment and exertion to delve into what else you could do that makes you deal with what you truly need for yourself, however wouldn't permit yourself to concede. Rather than being conveyed by means of trumpets, its conveyed with a gigantic murmur, a head shake, a la ugh. One more customer of mine (see a subject here?) put it so well in an email she kept in touch with me towards the finish of our meetings together: I've understood that since something doesn't make them leap up in the first part of the day doesn't mean it isn't my fantasy profession. It just implies that I may need to leave updates helpful as to why I'm on this specific way. I may need to advise myself that I truly have thought about things from each conceivable edge (and afterward once more, a few times, no doubt), and that I truly am on my correct street. Being liberated from the steady uncertainty, reasons, and re-thinking spares my mental stability and a huge amount of valuable, potential for enormity occupied time. I additionally asked The Interwebs, and got such incredible, changed answers on my Facebook page just as my tweeple on Twitter: Concerning me, there positively was certainly not a squinting neon sign that advised me to BE A LIFE COACH , jazz hands shaking and a 11 o'clock number being sung. Actually, there was generally opposition â€" heaps of Vampire voices disclosing to me it that everybody would accept I was a major flower child precious stone peruser, that it was anything but a genuine adult vocation, that no one would pay attention to me or have confidence in me or work with me. It wasn't until I experienced comparative activities that I gradually acknowledged how much sense being an ensured life mentor made to my qualities, what I cherished doing and realized I progressed admirably, what I needed to work for myself. It wasn't a trumpet-blasting second â€" it was a goodness poo second. I knew there was no turning around. This was It. Not to state that Trumpets can't occur, yet genuinely, quit limiting the things in your mind since you haven't had the lightning-jolt second that accompanied it. A goodness crap, a substantial murmur, loads of Vampire Voices, as well as the last snap of a unique piece shaping an image may very well be what you experience and its no less legitimate that than those trumpets themselves. Dont know when, dont know where, Furthermore, I cannot state that I give it a second thought! All I know is, the moment you turn Also, hes out of nowhere there, There wont be trumpets! There are no trumpets! Whoneeds.trumpets? (ba-BAAAAAAAAAAAAAhm!)

What a Military Recruiter Wont Tell You About the Commissary

What a Military Recruiter Won't Tell You About the Commissary What a Military Recruiter Won't Tell You About the Commissary Shopping at the base store and the base trade is among the advantages accessible to military families and retirees, however regular people will in general have an overstated thought regarding exactly how large an advantage those organizations offer. To put it obtusely, no, you cannot accepting a suit at the grocery store for $20, and you wont discover T-bone steak for 49 pennies for each pound. While the grocery store and base trade each offer great costs, they don't offer the huge reserve funds that numerous regular people figure they do. How Commissaries Run Officially called Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) Commissaries, these stores have Congressional endorsement to utilize citizen dollars for their development and activity. There are almost 240 such stores the world over. Supermarkets are required to sell their items at the cost they paid for them, in addition to a five percent overcharge that helps pay working expenses. That overcharge covers a large portion of the grocery store laborers, similar to clerks and stockers. A special case is the baggers, who work for tips. Its standard to tip baggers $1 to $5, contingent on the aggregate sum of the buy. The amount You Save DeCA cases to give by and large investment funds to the client of in excess of 30 percent. That implies a group of four shopping normally can spare about $3,000 every year, and a solitary individual can spare about $1,000 every year. In any case, real investment funds fluctuate starting with one region then onto the next, contingent on whether the nearby regular citizen food stores charge a business charge, and what supermarkets are accessible. In an immediate examination test, a basic food item request bought for $103.57 at a Walmart Super Store would have cost $89.79, including the 5 percent overcharge, at Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County, Florida. That is a not too bad reserve funds, however the 30 percent markdown asserted by DeCA would have put the bill at somewhat over $70. The Cigarette Exception While DeCA is legally necessary to exchange things at cost in addition to 5 percent, it is permitted to swindle a bit. A couple of years back, DeCA singularly chose to expand the cost of cigarettes sold in the grocery stores. To get around the law, DeCA began purchasing its tobacco items from military trades, which sell tobacco things at costs tantamount to the nearby non military personnel economy costs. Nonsmokers may extol this transition to improve the general wellbeing of the military and military retiree populace. Others may consider it to be a dismal point of reference. Will sweet bites be next on the hit list? Military Exchanges In contrast to stores, military trades are allowed to gain a benefit. A bit of those benefits goes toward neighborhood and administration wide causes, called Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) ventures. The trades are worked by three separate offices: The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES), The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM), and the Marine Corps Exchange. Similarly as with the grocery stores, no business charge is charged at the trades, and this can signify noteworthy savings over time or when you are purchasing costly things. The main government dollars spent on the three trade administration stores are for utilities, transportation of product to abroad trades, and military pay rates. The trade administrations subsidize 98 percent of their working financial plans from the offer of product, food, and administrations to clients. AAFES Price Matching It isn't hard to locate a comparable or even a definite thing in regular citizen stores that is estimated lower than the one supplied in a military exchange. For those events, the trades have a cost coordinating approach. Some military families whine about the choice accessible in the military trades. Absolutely, costly fashioner merchandise are infrequently in stock. Most more youthful enrolled families couldnt bear the cost of them even at a rebate. All things considered, many deal savvy customers are excited at the choice and costs. Other Base Discounts AAFES is additionally answerable for the activity of on-base help stations, alcohol stores, theaters, and even food establishments, for example, Burger King. Dont anticipate super-reserve funds from those spots. To build up gas and alcohol costs, the trade benefits occasionally study costs in the local area and attempt to keep their own costs somewhat underneath the misguided normal. Its not hard to track down misguided assistance stations that are selling gas less expensive, and less expensive alcohol is significantly simpler to discover. AAFES Employment The trades are a major wellspring of work for relatives of military individuals. Around 25 percent of the 52,400 AAFES partners are military relatives. Many have worked for a considerable length of time at various stores as theyve moved with their families starting with one establishment then onto the next. Three percent of partners are dynamic military individuals who work low maintenance during their off-duty hours. The trades and stores give important benefits and a great many dollars every year toward the administrations MWR programs. The money related reserve funds are acceptable, only not on a par with you may have thought.

10 Minute Facelift for Your Resume

10 Minute Facelift for Your Resume 10 Minute Facelift for Your Resume You have a resume that you buckled down on. To you, it appears to be comprehensive, efficient, and the time you put into it has evoked a feeling of pride at your completed work. Sadly, your point of view of your own resume fails to measure up to what an employing administrator or enrollment specialist may think about your resume. You've just put a great deal of time into your resume. Perhaps you did, however your substance and association are coming up short. All things considered, you may need to return to the planning phase. In any case, on the off chance that you feel sure that you've at any rate worked superbly moving the proper data onto the page, at that point here are some snappy modifications you can make to clean your resume. Reliable text style Your .5 text dimension changes aren't tricking anybody. A few people are so fixated on the idea that all their work experience must fit onto onesingle pagethat they put everything on the line to push all their substance together to make it so. The depictions of your work experience are in 12-point textual style while your aptitudes at the base of the page are diminished to 11.5 text style. In the event that you make it 12-point, it'll hop to the subsequent page! The repulsiveness! Navigate your resume and ensure the text dimensions are reliable. Perhaps the entirety of your headings are in size 16 while sub-headings are in 12 and the depictions are in 10.5. Going under 10-point textual style may start to get incomprehensible. Tastefully engaging format Your custom edges of .25s and .75s are not justified, despite any potential benefits. So also, space-sparing fixated work searchers will loosen up their edges as tight as possible to make their substance fit on one page. While this may help achieve what you've decided to do, it bargains the general stylish of the page. On the off chance that you've gotten all your data onto one page, that isn't really a reason for festivity. In the event that it required so much strategy and methodology, all things considered, your resume looks overwhelmed with words. Alongside the real edges, you should ensure you've spread out the substance in a consistent manner. For instance, your work experience ought to be in sequential request with your latest involvement with the top. Another model would be the means by which you separate your training field from your aptitudes and work understanding â€" maybe you join a few outskirts or lines to isolate these. Length of resume A resume ought to be compact, perfect, negligible, and simple to peruse. On the off chance that an employing chief sees a page loaded with words, they're not going to need to set aside the effort to peruse everything. You should make it as simple as feasible for the selection representative or employing administrator to perceive what they have to see. In case you're a prepared proficient with long periods of experience, a second page might be fundamental! In case you're an ongoing college alumni, you may very well utilize twelve an excessive number of words to state what should be said. In the school graduate's case, one page ought to be sufficient without expecting to change text styles and edges to get it going. On the off chance that only an a large portion of a page worth of substance is falling into the subsequent page, this may bargain the engaging look of the page and more exertion ought to be made to unite the data so it fits onto one page. In the event that the last bit of work understanding of the primary page falls onto the subsequent page, simply click enter a couple of times to make that whole square of related data go to page 2, as opposed to having it cut off and parting between two pages. Important Content Your resume is certainly not a combined rundown of sets of expectations. A resume ought not be a visual cue rundown of stuff you did. A resume is the thing that you achieved. A resume shows the excellent things you did that demonstrate you'd be a resource for an association. A simple method to do this is to take out exhausting lines like, Drove publicizing effort, and rather infuse a few measurements, key execution markers, rates, and other information that demonstrate your battles, in this model, prompted the achievement of something. Sentence structure In the event that it is anything but a sentence, why would that be a period? Probably the least complex update to make is checking for incorrect spellings and sentence structures. On the off chance that you no longer work at an organization, your portrayals ought to be past tense. Start every shot with an action word and don't end it with a period if it is anything but a total sentence. These are the absolute most straightforward alters to commit yet additionally simple errors to make. In case you're not incredible with sentence structure and linguistic structure, have another person look it over for you. Or then again look at the free application Grammarly. A solitary incorrect spelling can break the demonstrable skill you would have liked to pass on with your resume. Spare the document as: My resume and resume modified 2017 aren't the best resume document names. This is another correction that takes a couple of moments to execute. At the point when you send your resume to a recruiting administrator, you ought to accept that it will be added to a library of resumes. It's extremely hard to track down John Doe if his resume is spared as my resume. You can keep this as straightforward as Doe, John â€" Resume, or even attempt to get a bit progressively inventive with it. Forget about words like, Reexamined, or Last. Ultimately, sparing as a .pdf is the surest method to keep up the design. On the off chance that you utilized custom textual styles and downloaded formats, these can get slanted when others open it in .doc structure. Quality written substance is the final deciding factor By the day's end, the nature of your substance is the thing that will land you the meeting. There are numerous things you can do to make your resume champion and look incredible. These are only a portion of the convenient solutions you could utilize, yet what will consistently matter the most, is the extravagance of the substance. A large portion of your time ought to be spent on ensuring you're succinctly and plainly articulating what separates you and how you've demonstrated to be an important resource for past businesses. The substance is your attempt to sell something! When you've made certain about your substance, create the remainder of it into an all around bundled page that employing directors and selection representatives are calmed to see among a heap of ambiguous resumes.

3 Ways to Help Get America Back to Work for Give Labor Day - Workology

3 Ways to Help Get America Back to Work for Give Labor Day How to Volunteer for Give Labor Day What Does Labor Day Mean? Labor Day has always been a time to remember and celebrate achievement. The United States Department of Labor describes Labor Day’s founding as “a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” However for millions of us in 2012, there isn’t labor to celebrate. Last year, SmartRecruiters came up with a simple idea: on Labor Day spend a few minutes helping someone find a job and get America back to work. We posted to our networks,  Are you looking for a job? Lets Talk. Today, Ill help!  #GiveLabor  Day.   Jessica Merrell Miller was possibly the most important volunteer. She spread the good word. She gave her time to job seekers.  She helped people. Jessica took calls and answered emails from friends and strangers. I did too. So did Amanda Hite, Paul Zielinski, Kevin Grossman, Meghan M. Biro, and about 100 other volunteers. Pay it forward.   Give Labor Day.  Help get unemployed job seekers and those who are actively searching for work, find it. We will continue this Initiative each year in hopes that job assistance becomes a social responsibility of Labor Day as community service is a social responsibility of Martin Luther King Day. The “Give Labor Day” Initiative urges everyone to take tangible, specific actions to help the unemployed and underemployed find satisfying work. How to Volunteer for Give Labor Day 1. The 5 Essentials of a Powerful VP Sales Resume

The 5 Essentials of a Powerful VP Sales Resume Want to be considered for a coveted Vice President of Sales role â€" with a leadership resume that promotes you far above a Sales Manager or Director? You’ll face an uphill battle if you rely solely on the same metrics and quota figures that nailed your current position. Here’s why: employers assume that a VP-level sales leader will have already mastered the art of building relationships, training sales teams, and exceeding objectives. Most Sales Managers or Directors aiming for the VP slot have proven that they can close deals and surpass expectations! What your resume REALLY needs to make it past the gatekeeper for a VP Sales job are these 5 elements, strategically positioned on your executive resume to illustrate your readiness to take the helm of an entire Sales organization: 1 Descriptions of your impact on the entire region. No longer will you be considered a viable candidate for VP Sales if your results only impact your direct reports. Instead, you’ll often be expected to forge key relationships and create millions (if not billions) in sales across entire continents (as in this example of an International VP Sales resume). Here, this Director of Sales was able to show years of reputation-building success within a competitive part of the world, creating a lasting impression on top-level contacts throughout Asia Pacific (a message repeated throughout headlines, the summary section, and a list of Enterprise-Level Sales Wins on the front page). 2 â€" Strategic influence on both client accounts and internal relationships. As outlined in this VP of Business Development resume, executive leaders must be able to build coalitions and buy-in at the top organizational levels. Here, this candidate’s resume details a key business case built for a specific product to be developed and sold â€" raising his employer’s profile in the government and defense market. Built into the description of his current job, this accomplishment was prominently featured to demonstrate an ability to influence company success from the inside out. 3 â€" Infographics that illustrate the magnitude of your success. Nothing speaks louder than a picture on your resume! In the international International VP of Sales resume sample, you’ll see where millions in revenue success are shown benchmarked against previous numbers for each region. A chart or picture gives your reader an impression of quickly rising revenue figures, showing that your work gains the quick results required of an executive leader. 4 â€" Influence on team members groomed for executive achievement. Executive performance is often gauged by your ability to elicit contributions from direct reports or to bring others into top-level roles. This example of a Regional VP of Sales resume describes the results of Sales Manager (direct report) mentoring and coaching, with metrics to back up the scope of the impact (bonuses of up to $300K for 11 out of 12 reps). For your sales leadership resume, consider including team achievement or promotions as an indicator of a collaborative leadership style â€" especially in cases where you’ve needed to foster teamwork and strengthen revenue in a challenging territory. 5 Specific, landmark deals. At a VP level, you’ll be expected to be the star… with a sales record that includes never-before-closed agreements ranked at or near the top of your employer’s historic record. As outlined in the same example of an International VP of Sales resume, you’ll need to tout impressive records that prove consistent achievement (similar to this candidate’s accomplishment in gaining the largest global agreement in Australia and ranking as the #1 revenue source in APAC â€" both of which are shown prominently on the first page). Remember â€" your VP of Sales resume will be judged â€" and quickly â€" against the stellar achievements of peers in line for the same role. To tell a more powerful, compelling story, list specific metrics, add descriptions in context, strategically repeat major achievements, demonstrate the extent of your influence, and show collaboration at the executive level. It isn't intentional.Even now the voices of web masters reverberation in my mind: Is this on message for you? Is this actually part of your image? Will you truly construct steadfast perusers in the event that you talk about discouraging things? How is this persuading somebody to purchase your books? What's more, the appropriate responses are: I don't have a clue I don't have a clue I don't have a clue It presumably isn't Since that first burial service, I have conveyed dead relatives on at any rate 4 additional events. I surmise I have precisely the correct personality for the activity - my feelings are steady, my demeanors are non-undermining, I can be relied on to not cause a ruckus, I can effective cry a solitary tear for the event. However, even with my involvement with the activity, each final resting place feels heavier. You would figure I would become accustomed to the heaviness of an actual existence lost.Grandaddy never observed me graduate and Pawpaw never observed my wedding and I never got the opportunity to see Inez to Florida and Emily never sang with me and Mawmaw's earnest attempts never convinced me to shave my whiskers. I never made a duplicate of my book for Bill to peruse and I never had a genuine discussion with Peyton and Chris will never drop by my home for Halloween again. These things aren't disappointments, precisely. In any case, they are a reminder:Ghosts and craftsmanship a re a piece of the equivalent process. Those gone from my life structure the establishment of who I am. They straightforwardly sway my musings and activities. Their memory is indelible. This marvel isn't restricted to simply me.Frida Kahlo conveyed strict scars from polio and transport mishaps and a crushed spirit. Her phantoms can be found in her painting.Julie Cameron endured a separation with Martin Scorsese, at that point slid into liquor addiction. Her phantoms can be perused in her books.Amy Winehouse viewed the little, calm life she imagined for herself evaporate in the wake of The Industry. At the point when an injury is exacted, the body races to cover it up so it can heal. The soul regularly responds a similar way since we would prefer not to get injured once more. In our sheltered little cover of lack of interest, no catastrophe can come to pass for us. (This i s obviously finished figment since catastrophe isn't an occasion. It is a state of being alive).Instead, the best possible response is to grow. To state Yes! I felt this! It hurt! Presently take a gander at it!You figure the work you do is little. It won't get you on national TV. It won't gain you a huge number of devotees on the web. This might be true. But, incidentally, none of that matters.Your creation isn't a bit of substance. It is a vehicle for healing.Today, I will ask: Make workmanship. Respect your apparitions. Dab Complicated: Untangling Our Wired Lives by Randi Zuckerberg I'm at present perusing Dot.Complicated by Randi Zuckerberg. I love finding out about her viewpoint on tech-life parity and tales about Facebook's initial days. This is extraordinary for any individual who's keen on becoming familiar with the organization's history and for any individual who is wanting to see how innovation's changing the manner in which individuals communicate with one another. Jessica Huang, Account Executive 2. Profound Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport The purpose of the book is to more readily see how interruption and shallow errands detract from us delivering our greater tasks i.e., the profound work, vital reasoning, new thoughts that we're truly recruited to do. What Newport calls 'profound work' is something contrary to the earth we have of course in many workplaces. The book is tied in with building repeatable customs to beat those defaults, with handy techniques like time blocking, fixed planning, efficiently disapproving of various commitments, and how to take advantage of your oblivious brain. (Snappy tip: Give it space to move around instead of pulling out a screen.) Shahzad Ahsan, Demand Generation Manager 3. Force Questions: Build Relationships, Win New Business, and Influence Others by Andrew Sobel and Jerold Panas At the present time I'm centered around improving my capacity to all the more likely get customers and guide them to understand that they need and need. This book briefly strolls through canny and unique inquiries to support a business discussion or how to improve an individual relationship. It's a simple read and very noteworthy. Daniel Ratner, Account Executive 4. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo It is anything but a customary vocation book, however I'm thinking that its entirely appropriate in both my profession and life. I'm by and by continually feeling stalled and overpowered by all the things I need to do. This book is instructing me that by cleaning up my physical things, I make more space for things that issue. Additionally, she has a ton of good chunks of positive pondering cleaning up your psychological state. By making space in your genuine life, you're opening up mental space to seek after the things you love and were made for! Jena Viviano, Account Executive 5. Undercover Persuasion: Psychological Tactics and Tricks to Win the Game by Kevin Hogan and James Speakman It was prescribed to me when I was making a few inquiries for an extraordinary deals read to assist me with improving in my job here at The Muse. Probably the best takeaways I got was the way to turn a 'no' into a 'yes' by concentrating on pragmatic apparatuses that work. One thing I'll state in the wake of perusing a ton of deals books is that they're not only for individuals in deals. In the wake of perusing Daniel Pink's To Sell Is Human (another extraordinary read), you understand everybody, somehow, is in deals and can profit by these books. Dara Meyer, Account Executive 6. The Compass of Zen by Seung Sahn It appears to be digressively pertinent since I see care, and some of the time contemplation, referenced a great deal in vocation exhortation or self-awareness composing. Be that as it may, in these works, direct references to Buddhism some of the time get sifted through to fend people from killing. I don't imagine that is consistently fundamental, and I've commonly discovered the more 'unfiltered' source material much increasingly supportive with respect to self-improvement and extremely applicable to day by day life. Chris Ryan, Data Scientist 7. Prepared to Perform: How to Build the Highest Performing Cultures Through the Science of Total Motivation by Neel Doshi and Lindsay McGregor It applies information and measurements to the subtle and difficult to quantify significance of organization culture. As The Muse is scaling, the more we comprehend about how our way of life is creating, the more ready we'll be to continue making it more grounded and to continue pulling in driven and high-performing Musers. Automatic pension enrolment FAQ

Automatic pension enrolment FAQ by Michael Cheary 1. What is automatic enrolment into a workplace pension?Automatic enrolment into workplace pensions is a government initiative set up in October 2012, which requires all employers to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme if they are not already in one. It’s intended to benefit those who may not be saving enough to have the kind of lifestyle they’re likely to want for their retirement, and to provide another source of income on top of the State Pension.2. How does it work?Unlike other ways of saving, being in a workplace pension means you’re not the only one putting money in. Employers will contribute to the pot as well, and you’ll get tax relief from the government. This means that some of your money that would have gone to the government as tax, goes into your pension instead. The criteria for eligible workers is those who:• are not already in a qualifying workplace pension scheme• are aged 22 or over• are under State Pension age†¢ earn more than a minimum amount a year ( £10,000 in 2015-16)• work or usually work in the UK.3. When will automatic enrolment into a workplace pension affect me?Changes in the law came into effect from October 2012 starting with the largest employers (120,000 or more workforce) who enrolled their workers first.   Over the next few years, based on their size, all employers will have to automatically enrol all workers in to a workplace pension who meet the criteria above.Employers will write to their workers nearer the time, telling them the exact date that the changes will be made. For further details about ‘staging’ dates visit www.thepensionsregulator.gov.uk/staging.4. Why should I bother with a workplace pension?People are living longer, and spending longer in retirement than ever before. So thinking about how you’ll fund it is important.Plus, you won’t be the only one contributing to your workplace pension. Your employer and the government also make contributions (the latter in the form of tax relief), allowing your money to build up more quickly than if you were saving for your retirement on your own.5. Am I too old to start a pension?Being in a workplace pension is worth considering, even if you think you’re too old. Unless your retirement is just a few months away, there’s still time to build up some money â€" especially with the extra contributions from your employer and through tax relief.6. Am I too young to start a pension? Being in a workplace pension is especially beneficial if you start when you’re young. Just a small amount saved regularly has plenty of time to grow. And the sooner you start saving, the more you’ll get.7. How much will I get from my workplace pension when I retire?Your life may change a lot when you retire. This means your household finances may be very different too. It’s possible to get an idea of how much you will get from your workplace pension by getting a ‘pension estimate’ (sometimes called a ‘pen sion projection’). You can get this from your pension scheme provider. They may also have an online calculator that can help you work out the income you may get when you retire.Have a look at this workplace pension contribution calculator to work out how much you and your employer will each put into your pension pot https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/tools/workplace-pension-contribution-calculator8. Will I be forced to save into a workplace pension? No. Workers can opt out if they don’t feel a workplace pension is right for them. However, to try and encourage people to save for their retirement, employers will automatically enrol eligible workers back into their scheme at regular intervals (around every three years). This is because your circumstances may have changed and the time may then be right for you to start saving.Your employer will contact you at the time and you can choose to stay in the workplace pension scheme or opt out.9. What happens to my workplace pension i f I move jobs?Your workplace pension belongs to you, even if you leave your employer in the future. Nowadays lots of people move jobs several times in their working lives, which could mean you have a number of different workplace pensions by the time you retire.10. Should I open a workplace pension if I’m already paying into a personal pension? It’s possible to have both a workplace pension and your own personal pension, so you could choose to continue paying into both. Or you might choose to continue with just one of them. It depends on your circumstances, what you can afford and what your personal and workplace pension schemes are offering.11. I’m on a low income and can’t really afford to pay into a pensionBeing in a workplace pension is still worth considering, even if you think you’re too young or on a low income. Just a small amount saved regularly has plenty of time to grow. And the sooner you start saving, the more you’ll get at the end.Remember that any money you put into a pension scheme is not ‘lost’ income. It’s simply stored away and saved for your retirement, when you’re really likely to value it.Realistically, we all know that pensions can go up as well as down, but analysis suggests that for over 95 per cent that improvement is greater than the cost of the contribution, even after allowing for inflation. For over 70 per cent, the expected improvement is more than twice what they put in.To find out more about what automatic enrolment into a workplace pension means for you and the benefits of staying enrolled, visit www.gov.uk/workplacepensionsFind a job What Where Search JobsSign up for more Career AdviceSign up for moreCareer Advice Please enter a valid email addressmessage hereBy clicking Submit you agree to the Salaries

How to Write a Resume - When Should I Use Past Tense?

How to Write a Resume - When Should I Use Past Tense? You're in the middle of writing a resume and you need to know how to tell if you should write in past tense in your current position or the past. You want to be careful when writing in past tense, especially if you're not sure if you'll still be working there next week.First, let's talk about the job title you have now. If you're still in the same job, you will likely be writing in past tense. If you're still in a different job, however, you might be tempted to change it to the present tense. Unfortunately, this can cause more problems than it solves. The problem with using the present tense when writing a resume is that it leaves future possibilities open. When the boss says you're going to go on vacation for the summer, he doesn't need to say that you're going to take off and work for him again in August. If you go on vacation, he could choose to work for you again next summer and leave your future prospects open again. It's much b etter to avoid the possibility of leaving your future prospects open by writing in past tense. This is also a good time to list your skills and accomplishments on your resume. If you've only recently been promoted to a new position, you should not use the past tense. Instead, list your responsibilities as an employee before you were promoted. If you plan to move up at some point in the future, list your tasks and responsibilities as an employee when you were promoted. This information won't be available to the potential employer until the future date, but if you are hired, you should be able to count it against your time as a team member.Since your future possibilities will never be completely closed, don't assume you'll be able to use the past tense the whole time. If the opportunity to move up comes up in the future, you should still use the past tense. Just change the date to be the current date. When writing a resume, be aware of what the boss may be tempted to do in the future. It 's not a good idea to change the present tense on a resume to keep your future opportunities open.

Motivation Monday Control!

Motivation Monday Control! This week, lets get un-stuck!   Lets take control! Each day, each hour, be purposeful in the activities and thoughts you are engaged in. I.D. 5 Target Companies You Would Want to Work For If you dont already have 5 companies selected, you may be wondering how you do this.   You could identify competitors to your previous employer.   You could select companies you had once interviewed with or old job postings.   Maybe some of your past co-workers are working in companies you would want to work for. Use LinkedIn Find and follow these 5 companies on LinkedIn.   Literally, click on the follow company button on the right-hand side of their profile. See if you have any 1st degree connections. (If yes, these are people you will contact this week) Note the activity within the company (new hires or news or blog posts or tweets) You should subscribe to their blog and follow them on Twitter if they are using those tools. Check out the insightful stats on the company over in the right-hand column. Now,   you can see if they have careers posted, but you are not going to apply yet! Go to the Company Website Read the site. Become familiar with their mission, new projects, executive leadership. You are going to want to take notes and keep them somewhere so you can refer back to them. Develop Your List of Questions Based on your initial research of these 5 companies, what questions do you want answered?   Questions about their business!   Where are they going?   What are their challenges?   What makes their company a great place to work? You are NOT asking questions about job openings.   You are learning about the company to see if it is a place you would want to work. Here are some Questions to ask during networking to get you thinking in the right way. Search Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter for Contacts First, of course, you want to tap into your personal network of friends and family to see if they know someone who works at one of these 5 companies.   Go ahead, ask them Who do you know who works for Now search on all three of these platforms to see who you know who works in these companies now or who used to work there. Call them!   Email them directly.   Systematically reach out to each one of them THIS WEEK.   If you dont connect, try again in a couple of days. People are busy and may have overlooked your message or perhaps even deleted it.   Dont take it personally.   It happens. If you dont have any direct connections within these companies, then youll have to go back to your friends and family to see if they recognize any of the names and could make an introduction on your behalf.   Ask, youll never know. Out and About As you run errands or attend events, look for opportunities to ask people you meet about these 5 target companies.   What do you know about XYZ company?   Ive identified them as a company I might be interested in. Change How You Spend Your Time You want to speak to people. You dont want to get lost in the piles of resumes and online applications.   If there is a great job, you MUST find someone inside the company to talk to, either right before or right after you apply.   You just MUST! Changing your approach this way will give you a feeling of being in control.   Responding to job postings is re-active.   Reaching out to people is pro-active!

4 Ways to Negotiate a Higher Salary

4 Ways to Negotiate a Higher Salary 6 Flares 6 Flares Asking for more money is never an easy task, especially when you’re already in the role. But if you don’t, you’ll miss the opportunity to earn more.   Here are four ways to negotiate your way up the salary ladder from Robert Half. Ask and you might receive In the workplace, money is often seen as a taboo topic most of us want to avoid. But as the adage goes: if you don’t ask, you don’t get. When it comes to measuring your worth in dollars and cents there are lots of variables to consider, including the industry you work in, the current economic environment and the type of work you’re doing. If you’ve actually managed to secure a time to see your manager to talk about your salary, consider yourself halfway there. It’s a positive sign that he or she is receptive to what you have to say. Now you have to make it worth listening to. Here are four ways to ask for what you want. 1. Be a proactive problem solver When you ask for a pay raise, talk about the big picture. Flip the conversation around from what the company should do for you to demonstrate what you already do for the company â€" highlight the ways you are solving problems, meeting challenges and helping the business grow. What’s happening at the top level? What’s keeping your employer up at night? If they have a problem, offer solutions, and make sure you follow through on these suggestions. If your boss asks for help, jump on board â€" even if it’s not within your responsibilities. And where relevant, take the initiative to start projects that will add value to your company’s services to clients. It’s this additional 10 per cent effort that could earn you a pay rise.   2. Show them what you’re worth Kristi Hedges, a contributor for Forbes, advises you to talk about your future performance and not your past. “From a company’s perspective, the only reason to be paid more is because you will deliver more in the future.” But it doesn’t hurt to remind them about your accomplishments to date. Talk specifically about your role in projects, campaigns or other notable milestones for the company, then look to the future and the challenges you aspire to tackle next. Remember to convey what you take on beyond your current accountabilities. Illustrate what you do that nobody else is doing in your role. In marketing speak, it’s all about highlighting your unique selling point. 3. Speak their language What kind of manager or employer do you have? If they are a numbers person, make your case for a raise with tangible data. Show them you’ve brought in 20 per cent more business or highlight the fact that you’ve secured positive media coverage for the company, which has helped build brand awareness. If they value creativity, give them ideas or content. Remember, you don’t have to be the creative director to come up with a good idea. 4. Check out market rates Do your homework and find out what others in your field are getting paid. Check career and salary sites such as Robert Half’s Salary Guides and LinkedIn â€" some job listings include a salary. Also, ask people in your professional network, people you trust, what they think you are worth. Balance this research with the financial realities of the job market. For example, the ABS reports Australia’s unemployment rate rose to 5.7 per cent last month. But while it’s important to know about the current economic conditions to inform your salary negotiations, they shouldn’t stop you from asking for a higher salary in the first place. As Amy Gallo of the Harvard Business Review says, “Regardless of the state of the market, you should always negotiate.” In the workplace, asking for a salary hike is not just about money â€" it’s also connected to workplace perception, professional recognition and job satisfaction. If the answer is “no” Don’t be discouraged and don’t be afraid to ask for another review in three or six months’ time. Always ask for feedback and the reasons why your application has been dismissed, and make sure you respond to these before the next review. Remember, in today’s job market, it’s not enough to do your job â€" you have to excel at it and constantly prove your worth.
